Physical Education

The STM Physical Education Department is a well-established and passionate team of three full-time PE specialists, committed to developing confident, active and resilient young people.

Our core aim is to foster a lifelong love of sport and physical activity. This ambition underpins everything we do – from curriculum design to enrichment opportunities – as we make full use of our excellent on- and off-site facilities and actively listen to student voice through our Sports Captains and Sports Council.

Our Values

Everything within the STM PE Department is driven by our shared values. We strive to ensure every student is:

HONEST • RESPECTFUL • SUPPORTIVE • RESILIENT

These values shape lessons, competitions, leadership opportunities and the wider sporting culture at STM.

Students in Key Stages 3 and 4 are assessed through our HEAD, HEART and HANDS model:

  • HEAD – Thinking, understanding and tactical awareness

Academic Pathway – BTEC Sport

We offer the BTEC Sport qualification (EdExcel / Pearson) as our academic PE option.

  • Six hours per fortnight
  • Three components

Components 1 and 2 make up 60% of the course and are assessed through written assignments and sports performance and coaching.
Component 3 accounts for 40% and is assessed through a 90-minute formal written examination.

The course is delivered through a blend of classroom theory, practical lessons and off-site lessons, taught by all three PE specialists.
